Introductions
As a French speaker, one of the biggest questions that are asked of me is “How do you pronounce this word?” or “Am I saying this right?”. I am here to say that as a lifelong learner, it is okay to have these questions. In fact, they are even encouraged! We want you to get better and to get comfortable with the language.
French, like many of the Western languages, uses the Roman alphabet. There is a total of 21 consonants, and 5 vowels that are used in French. Combined, they can create over 35 different sounds, that can be used at any time during conversation.
However, certain letters such as the vowels and the letter c, can be added special symbols to denote how they should sound. These are the acute, grave, and circumflex accents, as well as the cedilla and the diaeresis. We will hopefully get a chance to cover these together in future videos.
